Whoops! California's carbon offsets program could extend the life of coal mines.

California's carbon offsets scheme, and others like it, may actually be affecting net emissions in a way that contradicts its intention. In this article, James Temple, MIT Technology Review's senior editor for energy, warns of the program's flaws and the existing limitations to perfecting any major offsets program.
