California’s shutting off power to prevent fires. Here are some better options.

In order to prevent fires in the coming days, which are expected to bring significant winds, California's major utility plans to switch off power in nearly 30 counties. In this article, James Temple, MIT Technology Review's senior editor for energy, suggests alternative safety precautions—that wouldn't leave thousands of households without electricity—that could be taken in the future.
