Where do humans live? A new map offers more detail than ever before.

Previously, mappings of cities and settlements have not been extremely accurate due to variations in resolution, as well as potential distortion in optical radar data. However, a new map, the World Settlement Footprint 2015 developed by the German Aerospace Center in Wessling, gives a more detailed and accurate portrayal of global human settlements than ever before, as described in this Technology Review article.
