Carbon farming is the hot (and overhyped) tool to fight climate change

Studies show that if farmers were to adopt techniques which store more carbon, such as cultivating crops which contribute more of their carbon to the soil, global farmland has the potential to capture and store an additional 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide. While promising, there is still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding this topic, as many unknowns still exist as to how soil microbe ecosystems actually work and what practices are the most effective at capturing and storing carbon dioxide. In this article James Temple, MIT Technology Review’s senior editor for energy, explores the priorities around minimizing the climate impact of agriculture and the potential effectiveness of using these techniques.
