Australia had plans to prevent fire blackouts. They just weren’t ready in time.

Burying transmission lines or providing off-grid or microgrid power systems to isolated communities can help prevent mass power outages in situations like Australia's massive bushfires, writes Bianca Nogrady for MIT Technology Review. But as disasters like the Australian fires intensify, it will get continually harder to adapt our infrastructure.
