Tesla’s trumpeted solar shingles are a flop

In 2016, Tesla acquired the company SolarCity for $2.6 billion. Following this purchase, the company launched their Solar Roof line, which included an agreement that Tesla would buy solar cells for its products from Panasonic, who would then invest in and set up production at Tesla’s $1.billion solar gigafactory in Buffalo, NY. In this article James Temple, MIT Technology Review's senior editor for energy, reveals how the majority of the solar cells being produced at this Buffalo facility are being sold overseas instead of being used in Tesla’s photovoltaic product.
