India’s surging economy could doom climate efforts-- unless richer nations step up

India finds itself in a state of rapid clean energy development. Its renewables capacity has already been doubled since the year 2015. To achieve this, the nation has been adding low-cost renewables to its already existing fossil fuel infrastructure. In his article, James Temple, MIT Technology Review’s senior editor for energy, evaluates the feasibility of the nation moving away from fossil fuels, while trying to bring hundreds of millions of its inhabitants out of poverty and expanding its economy.
