How a town destroyed by fire is trying to make itself fireproof

In November 2018, California experienced its most destructive Camp Fire in state history. This fire tore through the Sierra Nevada foothills, resulting in 85 deaths and destroying approximately 19,000 structures. In the town of Paradise, California, almost 90% of the homes were destroyed. In this article, James Temple, MIT Technology Review's senior editor for energy, details the beginnings of the town’s long recovery process. Urban Design Associates is helping the community rebuild. This consulting firm is making sure that focus remains on the most pressing issues, including that the utility company PG&E buries its electricity lines underground and that all new homes will meet the state’s wildland-urban interface code.
