Combining elements of water and air to form ammonia, J-WAFS’ 2017 seed grantee Karthish Manthiram is aiming for sun-powered small-scale fertilizer production

A new paper is out by Karthish Manthiram and his research team, sharing the results of their J-WAFS-funded research. They are combining nitrogen from the air and hydrogen from water to create ammonia–the key ingredient for fertilizer. Their small-scale device could be deployed in remote agricultural areas that currently lack the access and resources to obtain industrial-produced fertilizers. Read more here.

MIT engineers design an ultrasonic system to “shake” water out of an atmospheric water harvester. The design (two prototypes shown in photo) can recover captured water in minutes rather than hours.
